Climate change impacts human rights

 

In her address at the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet regarded the current climate situation the greatest threat to human rights.


“Storms are rising […]. Fires rage through our forests […}.” She said referring to the global situation, stating that “We are burning our future – literally”.

Land degradation may lead to 10-17 % loss of global GDP

 

In light of COP 14 in New Delhi, a Q&A session held by Executive Secretary of The UNCCD Ibrahim Thiaw on Friday, addressed the consequences of land degradation and talked about the postivie impact land restoration will have on global economy and climate.

 

With an estimated loss of 10-17% of global GDP, the Executive secretary urged action to be taken to restore land, as this will not only create jobs, but may help rectify up 30 % of emission.
